----------------------------------------------------------------------

A 45° bearing edge creates a smaller contact area between the drumhead and the shell, allowing the head to vibrate more freely.

Typical characteristics:

  • fast response

  • open and resonant sound

  • increased sustain

  • more attack and projection

  • high sensitivity at lower dynamics

45° bearing edges are commonly used in modern drum designs where clarity, articulation, and versatility are desired.

Rounded Bearing Edges

Rounded bearing edges create a larger contact area between the drumhead and the shell, resulting in a more controlled vibration.

Typical characteristics:

  • warmer overall tone

  • shorter and more controlled sustain

  • softer attack

  • stronger fundamental note

  • more vintage-style character

Rounded edges are often associated with vintage drums and are valued for their warm, focused, and musical response.
